After sixty years, a new formula and location are sought to accomodate the opening ceremony for the Nijmegen Four Days Marches. The reason for this change is the lack of interest (only 6000 out of 12000 seats at the stadium are filled) for the Flag Parade in contrast to the large efforts and costs required for the event in the stadium. We have listed the main jubilees for you:

This year, the British Metropolitan Police Service will celebrate it's sixtieth anniversary in Nijmegen. In those sixty years over 500 police officers from London walker about 225,000 kilometers. They walked in Nijmegen for the first time in 1952 on the 40 and 50 kilometers. Many walking police men and women are not only holders of the Gold Cross of the Four Days Marches, but they are also Centurions and have maintained a long standing friendship with the Netherlands.

The department of Defense is currently constructing it's fiftieth Camp Heumensoord in the forest south of Nijmegen. Today the camp was officially opened.

Of course our association celebrates it's sixtieth anniversary this year. This year's theme will be 'Gratitude'. And keep an eye out for those special jubilee stamps!

Tuesday 12 July 2011

Four Days Marches tests RFID chip
This year, all wrist bands for walkers in civilian or military groups will have a so called RFID chip (Radio Frequency Identification). This chip enables digital control posts without the need for any human actions, such as scanning or puncturing cards. The control posts for groups will consist of antenna carpets at several control posts along the way. Walkers using an RFID chip will also be provided with a chip to attach to their shoe laces as an extra means for checking the progress of the walkers.

The test using wrist bands containing a bar code has created quite some debates during the 2010 Four Days Marches. Registration of walkers at the start and at the finish line was flawless. At control posts along the way however, the scanning equipment did not perform as desired. This caused confusion amongst the walkers.
Because the use of a wrist band with bar code is more efficient during the start and finish procedures, all individual walkers will once more be fitted with a wrist band in 2011. For check points along the walks, individual walkers will also receive an control card. Walkers have to wear their wrist band during the entire Four Days Marches. If the wrist band is removed during the Marches, the band is no longer valid and the walkers is assumed to have abandoned the event.

Source: press release Stichting DE 4DAAGSE, 7 July 2011

Monday 11 July 2011

Facebook badge photo contest
Because we have noticed many Gold Cross Holders wearing their new badge, we will organize a Facebook photo contest during the next Four Days Marches. The physical exertion is also the highest during the first day of walking. Men and walkers with a weight problem run a higher risk of dehydration, especially in warm weather. These findings were made by Thijs Eijsvogels from the department of Physiology at the University Medical Centre St. Radboud. Thijs Eijsvogels will obtain his Ph.D. today, after four years of research during the Nijmegen Four Days Marches.
Thijs Eijsvogels was part of the research group headed by prof. dr. Maria Hopman from 2007 to 2010. He has done research into the effects of long term physical exertion within a group of 361 walkers. So far, very little was known about the effects of long distance walking, contrary to other endurance sports.

Source: Press release 1 July 2011, T.M.H. Hopman

Thursday 7 July 2011

Four Days Marches appoints traffic volunteers
Just in time for the 95th Nijmegen Four Days Marches on Tuesday 19 July 2011, Stichting DE 4DAAGSE has trained and appointed a group of 23 traffic volunteers. With this appointment of extra volunteers and interns, the commitment of the Gelderland-Zuid police force can be reduced and at the same time the desire of the municipality of Nijmegen to cut costs has been achieved.

Ever since last year the municipality, the police and Stichting DE 4DAAGSE have been discussing the use of traffic volunteers during the walking event in and around Nijmegen. To walking association K.N.B.L.O.-wandelsportorganisatie Nederland it is only natural that it's member associations such as Stichting DE 4DAAGSE provide for their own volunteers for ensuring traffic safety. In anticipation of planned reductions in police commitments to major events, Stichting DE 4DAAGSE decided last year to start training it's own traffic volunteers unit.

A large percentage of the unit has been recruted amongst students from the school for Safety and Security of the Regional Education Centre Nijmegen. "In close cooperation with the Gelderland-Zuid police, we have asked them to participate in this project. 19 students have volunteered. They have been trained by the Gelderland-Zuid police. Then Nijmegen mayor Thom de Graaf will appoint them as traffic volunteer and they can go to work during the Four Days Marches. The volunteers will work at quiet intersections and road blocks", stated Wim Velings, responsible for public safety and security within the committee of Stichting DE 4DAAGSE. According to the latest regulations for police assistance during large events, which have been announced by minister Opstelten earlier this week, the Four Days Marches will probably not be required to pay for it's police assistance. "Whether or not it is compulsory, our Stichting DE 4DAAGSE adresses the safety of it's participants with the help of many different agencies. By also taking on the responsibility for a part of traffic safety we are ahead of any formal regulations, but the scale of the Four Days Marches justifies these efforts."

Source: Press release Stichting DE 4DAAGSE 1 July 2011

Wednesday 6 July 2011

Four Days Marches research UMC St. Radboud

This year several departments of the University Medical Centre St. Radboud will begin research into the effects of an active life style on health, quality of life, progression of illnesses and perception of illness.
